WATCH | Quick-thinking Joburg man makes narrow escape from burning home

  • A Johannesburg man made a narrow escape from his house that was engulfed in flames.
  • The elderly man sustained minor injuries and firefighters were able to curb the spread of the fire.
  • The cause of the fire is unknown.

An elderly man in Florida, west of Johannesburg, had a rude awakening on the weekend when his house caught fire.

"The man was asleep but managed to get out of the house just in time," EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi told News24.

A video, circulated widely on social media, shows the roof of the man's house completely engulfed in flames.

Mulaudzi said the man was able to call the fire department for assistance before the damage became too severe.

Firefighters were able to curb the spread of the fire, which had already been blazing for more than an hour.

"Paramedics were on the scene to treat him for minor injuries. He also had difficulty breathing because of smoke inhalation," said Mulaudzi, who added that the cause of the fire was still unknown.

Police are investigating the matter.
