The Hanns Seidel Foundation, together with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and News24, will host a seminar on Thursday on harnessing the benefits of a Southern African Development Community (SADC) Standby Force in Mozambique.

The discussion, chaired by News24's Africa desk journalist Lynsey Chutel, will begin on Thursday at 15:00.

On 23 June, Southern African leaders agreed to deploy a Standby Force of the SADC to help Mozambique deal with violent extremism in its northern province.

A panel of experts will discuss the prospects of the SADC forces in Mozambique and their options.

Chutel will be joined by the following speakers:

  • Dr Agostinho Zacarias - Mozambican diplomat and expert in development, governance, peacebuilding and security;
  • Martin Ewi - ENACT regional coordinator for Southern Africa, ISS Pretoria;
  • Borges Nhamirre - senior research consultant, ISS Pretoria and;
  • Professor Abel Esterhuyse - head at the Department of Strategic Studies at Stellenbosch University.
