A man and a teenage girl are receiving medical care after they were shot in Mitchells Plain on Monday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said in a statement that an investigation was underway and a case of attempted murder had been opened.

Video footage that was shared widely on social media shows an officer fire warning shots into the air.

Frightened people started to scream and scatter.

"Police are following up on leads to arrest the suspects," Rwexana said.

The cause of the shooting is still unknown and no arrests have been made.
