A passerby stumbled on a heap of personal protective equipment floating in the Hennops River, near the Irene country club in Centurion, on Sunday morning.
In a viral video, the man can be heard saying that the boxes contained medical gloves and floated from the south side of the river.
"PPEs that our doctors and nurses have been striking for… thrown in the river."
"Do something with this, president, please," the man says in the video.
Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Kwara Kekana, confirmed that acting Health MEC Jacob Mamabolo visited the site after seeing the video.
"It is unfortunate that people would discard PPE during a global pandemic and additionally, pollute the environment," Kekana said.
The matter has been handed over to police for further investigation.
