Van Niekerk steals spotlight; Simbine's effort important - S24

accreditation

Wayde van Niekerk's 400m gold medal and world record feat in the 400m overshadowed the following 100m event - for South Africans at least. Akani Simbine's 5th place behind the likes of Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake was still commendable, says Sport24. Watch.

The 22-year-old South African had an excellent run against a world-class field in the 100m final.

Simbine, running in his first Olympics, had the quickest reaction time out of the blocks. Simbine looked on track for a medal, but in the last 15 metres was caught by the likes of Bolt and Canadian Andre de Grasse, and ended up fifth place in a time of 9.94
