- Breastmilk tastes slightly different at every meal. This is nature’s way of extending your baby’s palate.
- Babies have more tastebuds than adults.
- All humans have a natural liking for sweet foods, but you should delay the introduction of these for as long as possible. Get your baby used to non-sweetened foods first. Don’t add sugar or honey to food and drink and dilute any sweet fruit juice you offer.
- Taste for salty food is learned, not natural, but we learn fast! You don’t need to add salt to foods like mashed potatoes or scrambled egg. Let your baby learn to appreciate the unadorned, natural flavours of food.
- If you give your baby a food often enough, she’ll eventually develop a taste for it. Don’t be put off by the early refusal of important foods, but do space out the offerings.
