Meal ideas for your baby

The camera is ready, baby has eaten their first meal, granny has seen the video, but it’s weeks later and you’re running out of ideas for feeding baby.

Here are some suggestions from mothers.  Many babies enjoy picking up food and eating it themselves and will do so even when rejecting foods on a spoon.  Never leave a baby unattended when eating in case they choke, and keep foods that hard pieces can break off out of reach of baby. Most babies enjoy sitting at the table for family meals, in a high chair or on mom or dad’s lap. A toddler might enjoy kneeling on a cushion on a normal chair rather than a high chair. 


Porridges like jungle oats, Maltabella and tasty wheat or good old fashioned pap or phutu.  
Boiled egg with toast soldiers, scrambled egg, French toast fingers
Fish like haddock or hake
Mini pork or beef sausages
Baked beans
Mixed berries – strawberries, raspberries, mulberries (blackberries), blueberries and even cherries (pitted)
Yoghurt plain or mixed with pureed fruit

Snacks and light lunches

Rice cakes (you get baby palm sized mini rice cakes) 
Thick slices of fresh fruit such as mango, watermelon, peach, plum, nectarine, soft pear, pineapple
The fruits already mentioned and other fruits like grapes, strawberries, litchis, banana, oranges or naartjie if your baby is all right with the acidity – some mothers prefer to wait till after a year with citrus fruits, and some babies find that citrus and pineapple burn their mouths but that this improves as they get older.  
Small rectangles of cheese
Dried fruit like raisins, dates, prunes, apple rings, mango strips, apricot, pear, peach
Squares of bread with marmite or peanut butter or cottage cheese or avocado
Cucumber, sugar snap peas / mange tout, corn on the cob
Lightly sautéed broccoli or cauliflower or baby marrow for baby to hold and gnaw on
Home made rusks 
An occasional piece of droe wors or biltong (be careful of too much salt) and remember baby biltongs are often high in sugar as they use that as a preservative instead of salt.
A cold pasta salad with strips of red, yellow and green pepper and tuna or chicken strips
Garlic chicken livers (try it, I dare you…)


Whatever the family is eating is usually suitable, including chicken ala king, babotie, spaghetti bolognaise, lasagne, macaroni and cheese, mild curry, stew, soups
Chunks of vegetables to hold or scoop like butternut, pumpkin, hubbard squash, potato wedges, sweet potato, gem squash halves, broccoli, cauliflower, patty pans, baby marrow, beans, soft baby carrots, mielies
Foods baby can scoop up like rice, couscous, polenta, peas, sweet corn
Strips of steak, chops, chicken drum sticks, pieces of chicken breast or thigh (thigh is usually a bit juicier), sausages.

Honey should be avoided until baby is over a year as before then they can’t handle the botulism spores that might be present.

Never leave baby unattended when eating as they could choke and that needs quick action – they will not always make a noise when they choke.
