What's the baby up to?
Growth points

During this month your toddler should go for a routine check up to monitor his development. Here's what the doctor will check:

Walking – if your toddler can take at least 10 steps unaided
Limb movements – if your toddler moves symmetrically or seems unbalanced
Limb tone – for signs of abnormal posture, floppiness or stiffness
Pincer grip – that your toddler can use his finger and thumb to pick up small items
Drinking – if he can drink out of a cup unaided
Feeding – if he handles a spoon for feeding
Simple commands – that your toddler will show you his foot or nose or at least respond by looking at the foot
Word use– that he respond to words that have a particular meaning and use at least three words, even if they're his own version
Hearing – if your toddler turns when called
Vision – that he makes eye contact or follows an object moved in front of him

Other stuff to think about

Stop sibling strife

How you handle your kids can either defuse rivalry or add fuel to it. Some ways to be a force for good:

Avoid comparing one child with another
 Watch out for favouritism
 Give each child individual time
Encourage separate playdates and activities for your children
If one child requires more of your time and attention, compensate for this with your other children.
Try to ignore bickering, squabbles or disagreements. Discipline both children rather than only one of them – it takes two to fight.
It's unrealistic to expect an older child to be more mature than a younger child during conflict.
Repeated patterns of hostility, aggression, teasing and anger must be treated seriously.
