Your baby: Week 12

What's the baby up to?
Growth points

When your baby can hold his head up, the world has so much more to see. Head control is part of your baby’s gross motor skill development. As development happens from head to toe, head control will be the first milestone your baby has to meet for healthy and balanced growth. In the first 3 – 4 months of his life he will learn to control his head movements and strengthen his neck enough to hold it up.

Timeline of your baby’s head control:

You will continue to support your baby's head when you pick him up for the first 3 months.
Although your baby can’t control his head when picked up, he is able to raise his head long enough to move
it from side to side when lying on his stomach.
By 3 months he is able to control his head when gently pulled up to sit – his head might still be a little
wobbly while you support him in the sitting position. He will also be able to lift his head 90 degrees away
from a flat surface when lying on his stomach. Between 2 – 4 months he is able to raise his head and chest
above a flat surface if his arms are extended in front of his chest.
By 4 – 6 months his head is steadier and does not fall backward as you sit him up and once sitting, he is
able to hold his head steady.

Take care of you...

Who am I as a parent?

Our parenting style is usually a mixture of our parents' style, what we believe we should be doing, and
instinctive behaviour. As you spend more time practicing your parenting skills you may find that things
you said you would never do (suck the dummy to ‘clean' it; lose your temper at a crying child) happen
almost outside your control. Being an aware and conscious parent, this can be disturbing and disappointing.
But we are all human and no parent lives who has not let their own high standards slip at some point.

Take some time to sit with your partner and discuss some of these issues:

What discipline measures do I believe in?
What are my non-negotiable house rules now and in the future?
Am I happy to go back to my previous job full-time?
What financial provisions should we be making for education?
Is either parent the one with the veto rights?
Which issues should be discussed before decisions are made?
What are my parenting no-nos? (These may include hitting, swearing in front of children, smoking in the house,
religious issues or any number of other issues.)
... and think about

The milk express

Expressing milk is an answer for working mothers who still want to breastfeed.
Express three times during the day e.g. at morning tea time, during lunch time and mid-afternoon.
Whatever was expressed on the Monday at work would be offered to the baby on the Tuesday.
Sterilise your breast pump at home and keep it in a closed container at work when you are not using it.
Note that breast pumps should never be reused, shared, hired or sold.

It is not necessary to refrigerate the expressed milk until you get home. However, breast milk for preterm babies
needs to be refrigerated within 6 - 8 hours. Using this method, you will be able to fully breastfeed your baby for
as long as you want to.
