Your baby: Week 18

What's the baby up to?

Growth points

Sitting is the beginning of a whole new world for your baby - it marks the first step to being able to explore the world.
Hands-free and upright = more fun!

You will be able to prop-up your baby in the sitting position as soon as 2 weeks after birth, but this doesn’t mean that your baby is able to sit.
Between about 4 to 7 months your baby will be able to sit independently (without back or side support).
Before your baby will be able to sit on his own he will first master head control and roll over.
As soon as he has muscle strength in his back and neck he will gradually be able to sit for longer without toppling over.
If your baby is not showing good head control or not rolling over by 6 months, consult your paediatrician to make sure everything is on track.

Other stuff to think about

Talking the talk

Communication with your baby from birth is very important for his speech and language development.

Your baby imitates your facial expressions.
Around this age she might begin to use different vowel sounds.
You may hear your baby making more sounds when playing alone.
Your baby may start "squealing" during this time as she explores her own voice by making high-pitched
and low-pitched sounds.

How to talk to your baby

Babies understand much more than you may think.
They love the routine talking or singing activities like when you point things out to them when you shop,
when you pack out the toy box or when you sing the same song every time you change his nappy or tell a story
when it is bedtime. He will not understand the song or the story, but he will love the repetition of sounds.
Babies and toddlers love repetition and you should not worry at this stage that they will get bored to hear
the same things over and over again. Talk to your baby in full sentences, use full words and limit baby talk.
Always use his name when you are talking to him.
Ear infections are very common during the first year and recurrent ear infections delay when your baby starts to speak.
