Tammy Wolhuter (registered dietician) answers:

Feeding babies and figuring out quantities of food to give your baby can be tricky, since all babies are different.

Consider making your own baby food. This way you can monitor exactly how much and what kinds of ingredients are going into the dish. You can also combine the food with the outstanding formula that your baby is not managing to drink.

There are many porridges on the market that require mixing with baby’s formula milk which you can consider to ensure that your baby consumes the required amount of formula.

The serving sizes that are indicated for infants on formula containers are a guideline, although your baby will not necessarily follow these quantities every day. Bear in mind that babies and children have the ability to regulate their energy intake, and he will let you know when he has had enough. Never force-feed your child. Be sure to monitor your baby’s growth (height and weight gain) every
month to ensure that he is following his growth curve. This will tell you if he is getting adequate nutrition.
