What happens to a child in a car crash – expert

It’s not just about the speed you’re travelling if you have a car accident, but also the momentum of the vehicle and its occupants, according to Western Cape EMS spokesperson Robert Daniels.

The terrifying facts

We asked Robert how much chance a small child has of surviving a collision without a seat belt. His answer is chilling. He explains the mechanics of a car crash and how small children are at the most risk in the event of a smash. Additionally, children not restrained by seat belts are highly likely to be thrown out of the car in an accident.

Holding on to your child? Again, a terrible idea.

We also asked Robert about car seats and how to make sure your child is in an appropriate seat for their age and size.

Step one, he says, is always strap your child in. Kids in the front seat, he reminds us, will go through the windscreen in the event of a crash.

When it comes to car seats/baby seats, he says that the most important factor to check is how tall the child is, and to ensure that the seat belt or car seat straps are not near the neck of the child.

Robert Daniels is an expert who has, in the course of his duties within EMS, been witness to the devastating effects of road accidents, and his advice should not be ignored.
Even a short trip can place your child at risk- always buckle up.
