Remember Lemonade Stand, the Apple II game from the 70s and 80s? The simple game starts you off with $2, gives you the production price of lemonade for the day (say 4c), and the weather report. You decide how many glasses to make, whether you're going to make an advert (15c), and the price per glass of lemonade. You get a financial report for the day, detailing sales, expenses and profits, which you'll use to tweak the next day's production. And so it goes... until you're tired, really. It's fun, it's addictive, and it's ultimately educational.
More recent games include Lemonade Tycoon and Lemonade Jack, adding additional fun elements such as tweaking the recipes, managing stock and choosing locations. And beware: expect the unexpected thunderstorms and ants in the sugar!
Real life Lemon Stand
Now you can play it real-life. Started in the US, Lemonade Day is a fun, strategic 14-step live game that walks youth from a dream to a business plan. It inspires kids to work hard and make a profit, and teaches them to spend some, save some and share some by giving back to their community. Sounds good.
The organisation has already served 250,000 children across the US and Canada, and now that Google is an official partner, it aims to bring this experience to 1 million children.
South Africa saw its first Lemonade Day in Knysna during the July 2015 holidays. South African investment guru Scott Picken thought it was a great idea and got motivational speaker Clem Sunter on board to change the lives of 250,000 in Africa. To start, they chose 300-500 children between the ages of 8 and 16 in Knysna to equip with the entrepreneurial skill sets they'll need to plan, manage and run their own business – a lemonade stand.
