INFOGRAPHIC: 70% of babies dying on the road could've been saved by seatbelts

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is once again urging parents to invest in child seats or child car restraints in order to decrease the number of children dying on South African roads. The call has also been made to municipalities to provide speed calming measures around schools and to make play areas safer.

The RTMC's theme for this year's Child Protection Week was, "Let us protect all children to move South Africa forward." This can be done by ensuring our roads are safer and that we parents and caregivers take extra care when their children are in the car with them.

We should also pay attention and do research about the various car restraints on the market so we buy the best one for our children's safety.

How does a car seat help?

Appropriate child restraints systems are specifically designed to protect babies and young children from injury during a collision or a sudden stop, by restraining their movement away from the vehicle structure and distributing the forces of a crash over the strongest parts of the body, with minimum damage to the soft tissues.

Drivers should always remain cautions of pedestrians and drive a slow and steady pace around schools, residential areas and play areas. Let's remember to protect all children to better their and our country's future.
