If you haven’t stuffed those stockings and put up that tree, you'd better get a move on, because Santa Claus is coming to town!
With the city abuzz and the festive lights blinking in town, everyone is gearing up to celebrate the festive season.
But as you prepare for Christmas, the kids are also already in holiday mode which, let’s be honest, makes planning just a little more challenging. We’ve got the perfect solution though: get them involved in the preparations!
And they can start with these creative cookie ideas.
Sweet Stars
Ingredients
- Cookie dough (Click here for a basic cookie dough recipe)
- Boiled sweets
Tools
- Baking paper
- Rolling pin
- Cookie cutter(s)
- Large piping nozzle
- Chopstick
Tips and tricks
- The tougher and firmer your dough, the crumblier your biscuits will be. We’d suggest using a softer dough and if you’re afraid it won’t be manageable to transfer onto a tray, roll it between two baking sheets and transfer it directly. You’ll need to put down a baking sheet on your baking tray anyway.
- Make sure you crush the sweets finely. If they’re not fine, they won’t melt.
- Don’t roll your dough out too thin, because they will start to mix with your sweet centre.
- While we know that all ovens are different, we baked our cookies for 10 minutes at 180 degrees. Be sure to keep a careful eye on them as they tend to brown quite easily. And if you leave them in the oven for too long, your boiled sweets will start burning and go a different colour. We don’t want to lose the vibrant colours!
- Make a little hole in your cookie with a chopstick (before baking it); when it comes out of the oven and is cooled down, you could pull a ribbon through the hole and voilá – you’ve got edible Christmas tree ornaments!
Multi-coloured cookies
Ingredients
- Cookie dough (divided into 3: leave one plain, dye one red and the other green)
Tools
- Baking paper
- Rolling pin
- Cookie cutter(s)
- Chopstick
Tips and tricks
- We simply dyed our cookie dough with regular food colouring. Be sure not to add more than a drop or two. Too much colouring makes for a bitter biscuit and nobody wants that!
- Make sure when you add each colour to your baking sheet that you use small balls of colour to avoid getting a cookie that’s all red or green.
- Here again you can make edical Christmas decorations by making a little hole in the cookies before they go in the oven. Tie a ribbon through it – perfect!
