Lauren Clark wrote in and shared her amazing story:
"I am a single mom, and I made a tough financial decision to buy a bigger house (from a 2-bedroom townhouse) so that my domestic worker, Flora, could live in with us.
Practically, this made sense as she required 2 taxis to get to my home each morning before 06:30am, warranting a 04:00am wake-up for her. Flora is my little boy’s favourite person, without a doubt.
From when he was a crawling baby when he heard her keys in the door, he’d scramble through to the door to get to her. Now, aged 16 months, when he hears her voice in the kitchen at 06:00am, he runs down the passage into her arms.
They spend their day together, socialising with the other little ones and their nannies in my complex. Often when I come home from work I spot them in the cul-de-sac playing, and my son often runs back to Flora for a hug (or a leg squeeze in his case).
He also spends a lot of time in her quarters – that is where they have their daily “music and dance” session or he likes to sweep her carpet for her. It has become especially sweet these days as my son has started saying her name, although it sounds more like Fa-Yah than Flora.
Every day, I give thanks for Flora. She is a mother of 2 grown sons, so she knows the energy and engagement a little boy requires. She is kind to Leo and so gentle, and he learns with her every day. I am thankful I can afford to have a nanny for my son, and more importantly, I am really glad she chose to live in with us.
When she goes home on Friday, my son gives her a big hug and the two of them high five each other.
Such is the society we live in, where domestic work is a necessary job for many women (and men) and I am raising my son to be grateful for the relationship he has, and will have, with Flora and the positive impact she has on our lives."
