Walk of Remembrance for pregnancy and infant loss awareness

October is International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, which aims to create awareness of the heart shattering experience that 1 in 4 families experience.

The objective of the Walk of Remembrance team is to remove the stigma and silence around this sensitive subject. The event seeks to bring together parents, family members, and friends to remember a precious baby who has died due to miscarriage, stillbirth or SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), and neonatal or any type of pregnancy or infant loss.

In October 2019 the 2.5km walk/run will be hosted by Avianto Estate, in Muldersdrift, Gauteng, where the walk is open to families and individuals.

Families are encouraged to bring picnic baskets and blankets and to join other infant loss parents, honouring lost infants and sharing experiences after the walk.

The Walk serves as an opportunity to bring honour to lost babies and healing to parent's hearts, and also creates a support network which ensures support to families who in future may sadly walk in these same shoes one day.

The first Gauteng Walk of Remembrance was held on the 20th October 2018. The event took place at the Pretoria Botanical Gardens.

“We were totally blown away with the attendance and received almost 4 times more participants than we initially anticipated” said Amanda Dean, one of the organisers of the event, at the time. “We hope to grow on this success and have established partnerships that respect and honour the cause that effects 1 out of 4 families”.
