A viral infection that often causes a combination of symptoms including a fever, runny nose, cough and headache. A cold usually develops over a day or two, but flu can literally strike within a couple of hours.
What to do
Treat a runny nose conservatively with saline drops. Don’t give cough syrup unless prescribed by a doctor. Control the fever by sponging the child with lukewarm (not cold) water. Paracetamol helps reduce fever and aches and pains, but if the fever does not disappear within three days, see a doctor.
