From details on qualifying to required documentation, here's what you need to know to write a supplementary exam.

The closing date for applications to the NSC supplementary exam is 31 March 2021.  Here's what you need to know.

You qualify for a supplementary exam if you:

  • Need a higher grade to be able to apply for your chosen course or university.
  • Are a multiple examinations opportunity (MEO) candidate.
  • Need to pass a subject or subjects to qualify for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Were unable to write your final exams because of an illness.
  • Were unable to write or finish your exam as a result of a death in the family or other reasons.
  • Encountered an irregularity during the time of the NSC final examinations that is being investigated. You will be given provisional enrolment while the verdict is pending.

Please note:

  • You may only register for supplementary exams if you sat for the 2020 NSC exams.
  • You may only write a supplementary exam for the subjects that you sat for.
  • You need to supply the department with evidence of why you were unable to write your exams or why you need to improve your results.

The supplementary exams will be written in June 2021 and you will only be issued with a new certificate if your results have changed.

Your application must include:

  • State of your results
  • Certified copy of ID or passport
  • Motivational letter to explain why you need to write the exam.

Re-marking and re-checking

If you want your exam to be checked or re-marked, you may register online

A re-mark means that the original answer script is marked for a second time by a marker. A re-check of your scripts is a further check to ensure that all questions are duly marked and that all marks are correctly calculated.

If you you feel that the mark allocated is not a true reflection of your performance on the papers written, you may submit an application for the re-mark of your scripts. The cost for re-marking is R120 and R29 for rechecking.

Applications for re-check and remarking close on 10 March 2021.

Visit the Department of Basic Education for more information.

You can also call the nearest office of the Department of Education in your area to enquire about your results or make any other examination-related enquiries you may have.
