Necessity is the mother of invention, something Ronald Kock, a teacher at Diazville High School in Saldanha, is all too familiar with.
Kock came up with an innovative method to use a box for screen recordings by teachers who wished to record lessons, but lacked the resources.
"Through my engagements on social media, I saw a box and I also received a lot of requests on how to record videos. As a creative person, it stimulated me to find a solution to the problem. I did some research and managed to put something together through a few modifications and applications software that is freely available," he says.
Kock posted the solution on Facebook and Twitter. The response was overwhelming, with almost 2 000 views. A local educator created her own version from the design of the box.
Kock said that, due to the realities of teaching in a rural area, he always had to think outside the box.
He trains other teacher in ICT integration and in this way is able to live out his passion for teaching, learning, curriculum development and capacitating others to become educators of excellence. He acquired his honours degree and post-graduate certificate in FET Mathematics (cum laude) and is currently enrolled at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology for a Master's in Education in the field of digital literacy in ICT.
He has a FET Mathematics website, a YouTube channel and is in the process of creating a Facebook group for Mathematics and Technical Mathematics.
