Developing a love for reading takes time. Parents could follow the following tips to encourage their children to read.
A love of reading
- Have fun, interesting books available at home. There are lots of wholesalers that sell discounted books. A number of the more popular bookstores also often have big sales, where stock is sold at a fraction of the normal retail prices.
- Visit your local library.
- Enid Blyton books may not be interesting to your child now. After all, they’re quite old fashioned. Forcing your child to read The Faraway Tree may actually discourage him from reading. Find something more current.
- Lead by example. A child is more likely to develop an interest in reading if they see their parents engrossed in books.
- Develop an afternoon or bedtime reading routine - it makes for fantastic quality time.
- Let your child choose the book that he wants to read. That way he’s more likely to spend time reading.
- Read books to your child with expression and sound effects.
- Encourage your child to practice reading aloud.
- Ask your child, without interrogating him, what part of the book he most enjoyed.
- Ask older children to read to their younger siblings.
- Develop a reading chart and mark how far your child has read his book.
- When buying presents for friends, ask your child to choose the book.
- Create a kids book club. Invite your child’s friends over for an afternoon of book swapping and chatting.
