No buddy like you

'Hey Brandon, come over and play passage cricket, and then my dad will take us to the field.'

Two seconds pass. He dials again.

'Hey Brandon, Joel again. Bring your soccer cards!'

Two more seconds pass.

'Hey Brandon, Joel here. Hurry up!'

This is a relatively new friendship, but it's clearly built on a number of shared interests. And I confess, I'm just as happy when Brandon comes over, because while they play passage cricket and argue over swapping cards, I get to sit on my bed and read a book.

Not all my sons' friendships have been as successful. There was C, who arrived at our house for a playdate with a cigarette lighter to play with and was indignant when I confiscated it. And there was M, who wouldn't eat anything in our house and so cost me a fortune in take-aways. And of course other M, who hit a guest on the head with a cricket bat at a birthday party.

But a good friend is gold, to kids and lazy moms. Especially in the school holidays.
