Yesterday, Stats SA published their annual Recorded Live Births report, revealing the name Enzokuhle as the number one name for both girls and boys in SA.
The name, meaning "expected to do great things" in both Zulu and Xhosa, has not been in the top 10 list in previous years, and it knocked off the names Junior (for boys) and Princess (for girls) from their top spots, firm favourites for the past 3 and 2 years, respectively.
So we wondered why this name would pop up out the blue.
The Stats SA data was compiled from the total number of live births registered with the Department of Home Affairs in 2017. Beyond the facts and figures, no information is available to explain the reason behind the popularity of the names.
Curious to know, we did a little digging and, according to our sources, it could be due to a popular song by South African rapper Duncan Skuva.
The song is titled 'Enzo' after the rapper's daughter.
Do you think the song is the reason for the most popular name in the country? What inspired your choice of name for your child? Tell us by emailing to email@example.com and we could publish your response.
Released in early 2017, the song sees Duncan sharing a conversation with his daughter, warning her about the future obstacles she will face as a woman in SA, and according to social media, it seems the song has hit a nerve with local parents:
The clearly doting dad from Durban also regularly posts the cutest pics of his little girl Enzo on Instagram:
