Pregnancy week 14

How's the foetus in week 14

Moving hands

  • Your baby weighs about 43g and is about 8.7cm long from crown to rump. Your uterus is about the size of a large grapefruit.
  • Your baby's neck has developed and she starts to inhale and exhale.
  • The amniotic fluid regenerates itself every three hours.
  • Your baby's chin no longer rests on her chest and her hands become functional.
  • This week, her parchment-thin skin covers itself with lanugo (ultra-fine, downy hair that usually disappears before birth).

What's with my body: More sex?

  • Your energy levels will increase, but you also need to rest as you baby is growing faster than ever.
  • Your sex drive may increase as you feel more energised and less nauseous.
  • You might experience nausea if you don't eat regularly and rest enough.

Your baby

A fine hair called lanugo is starting to form on your little one's head and you may feel flutters in your tummy as your baby becomes more active. Because your foetus' body is now growing more rapidly than its head, it looks increasingly more proportionate.

A female foetus's ovaries move from the abdomen down into the pelvis around this time and your baby starts to produce thyroid hormones because the thyroid gland has matured. Your baby now weighs about 45 grams and is about 9 cm long from crown to rump.

Your body

We're happy to be the ones to tell you that your risk of miscarriage is now greatly reduced, so breathe a little easier and enjoy the (sometimes hectic) ride towards new motherhood.

Common pregnancy complaints:

Backache

Keep your stomach tucked in when you walk so that your back doesn't sway excessively. Stay off your feet as often as possible, wear a pregnancy belt if necessary and use a hot water bottle for aches. More tips for backache.

Constipation

Drink lots of fluids, eat high-fibre foods and exercise daily. You can take stool softeners but not laxatives.

Gas

Avoid gas-producing foods such as broccoli, onions and beans.

Heartburn

Eat small frequent meals, don't eat just before bedtime and raise your head when you sleep. Avoid spicy and fatty foods. You can munch on crackers and take an antacid such as Gaviscon.

Tip of the week

Expect to gain up to 5kg in this trimester, making sure you get an extra 300 calories a day from nutritious foods, keep drinking your 8 glasses of water daily and make sure you get 1000mg of calcium daily.

If you haven't started exercising perhaps now you may have some of your energy back and can consider doing your 30 min of daily exercise. Take it easy to start with though. Try not to stand for too long at a time, particularly if you are on your feet all day at work - try to sit down as often as possible.
