Kissing your kids on the mouth ‘taboo’?

accreditation

An author has put herself in the firing line by stating that parents should stop kissing their children on the mouth immediately as it’s too confusing for kids to understand, according to yourtango.com. She declared that lip-kissing is "sexual" in nature.

'I kissed a girl'

Dr. Charlotte Reznick is the author of The Power of Your Child’s Imagination: How to Transform Stress and Anxiety Into Joy and Success. She said that a kiss on the lips is too stimulating, adding that if a child sees mommy and daddy kissing each other on the lips and then they kiss their child, that this creates confusion in the child. She labelled the lips an “erogenous zone”, a statement that drew anger from parents.

Responding psychologists kicked against Reznick’s opinions, stating that kissing your kids on the lips is not confusing; in the same way that breastfeeding is not confusing for a child. They commented that kissing on the lips created positive perceptions about physical affection and love and positive subconscious feelings in children.

Stop seeing sex where it isn't!

They also stated that society is too quick to sexualise certain activities.

Part of the discussion has revolved around at what age (if any) it becomes inappropriate to kiss your child on the lips. Reznick said it’s never appropriate, others say that kids will stop once they feel uncomfortable and some will continue this expression of affection even as adults.

While parents differ on their choices when it comes to expressing physical affection, few agree that kissing babies has any potential for harm. Some simply don’t enjoy slobbery kisses but others adore the big smacks on the lips from their little ones.

Do you think there’s a cut-off age for kissing your kids on the lips?
