Big ideas for little hands

Project: Dress up

Difficulty rating: Easy

Warning: Messy project

Time: ±30 minutes. The more its and bobs you give the children to stick on to the cardboard, the longer it will take them. So raid the cupboards for as much stuff as you can find!

  • Take a strip of cardboard that you've pre-cut to fit your child's head.
  • These can be plain strips or fashioned into crowns.
  • Provide a glue stick each, some stickers, buttons, beads, sequins and for really brave, some glitter or even glitter glue pens.
  • Help to decorate the crowns then staple at the ends together to fit each child's head.
  • Provide a few dress-up items for some extra fun.

Project: Flower power

Difficulty rating: Needs supervision

Warning: You'll need patience and enough plant variety in your garden for this to work

Time: ±45 minutes- 1 hour

  • Gather together several containers.
  • These can be yoghurt pots, glass jars or even dog food tins that have been cleaned and any sharp serated edges removed.
  • Cover the containers with pretty fabrics or paper.
  • Decorate them with bows, buttons and beads and leave them so the glue can dry while you and the children ramble around the garden picking flowers.
  • If you have some oasis handy, push some in each container and show your child to push her flowers into the oasis to form an arrangement.
  • This is a great activity to do with children if you're hosting a play date as the flowers make a lovely gift for mom afterwards.

Project: Beads and bobs

Difficulty rating: Need supervision

Warning: Messy project. Some forward planning is needed. You will need to buy macaroni and a variety of pasta shapes that you can thread into a necklace. If you can, find a bead shop that sells large beads with openings wide enough for thick string, a shoelace or wool to pass through. These will be great additions to your child's craft project.

Time: ±45 minutes

  • Give each child  a variety of pasta shapes to paint.
  • Do not let them get the shapes too wet as the pasta will become sticky.
  • If you have glitter, let the children roll the pasta in glitter for some extra dazzle.
  • Once the pasta is dried, help each child thread them onto a piece of string or wool until they are happy with their accessory.
