Local NGO gives children more reading and language tools with new Words Can Change Worlds Campaign

Shine Literacy has started the Words Can Change Worlds campaign to help increase South African children’s access to quality literacy learning resources. 

Over the past twenty years, this local NGO has taught over 17 000 children how to read and write and is now aiming to inspire parents, caregivers and communities as well to play an active role in promoting early literacy through their new campaign. 

Their mission through the Words Can Change Worlds campaign is to to ensure that every child in Shine Centre schools have access to reading resources for 2020 right through to 2021. 

But they need help to get there. 

The organisation is hoping to gain public support through small monthly donations which will ensure that each child receives a reading resource, namely: A literacy game, a storybook, creative writing material and the Little Issue magazine.

This will include parent packs with helpful tips on how parents can support children in paired and storybook reading.

"What we hope to achieve is for each child to spread the love of reading by inviting them to share their books and literacy games with other children in their families and communities,” says Shine Literacy’s Executive Director, Maurita Weissenberg.

She added that parents and caregivers would also be able to join Shine Literacy’s Community of Practice, where they will receive tips on how to develop a culture of reading at home.
