Local children's book author Nathan Adonis has recently released a picture book titled, Mayine.

Set along the Eastern Cape coastline, the story follows Mayine, a young boy who goes on an adventurous search to find his dog Amafu.

The sweet local story explores themes of friendship and why children need to believe in themselves, even during uncertain or difficult times.

Mayine, which means ‘let it rain’ in isiXhosa is also a deliberate title, symbolic of the destiny in the story where Mayine returns with his fluffy friend, Amafu (clouds in isiXhosa), and literal clouds to quench the drought the seaside village has been experiencing.

The book also features illustrations by the talented artist, Phathu Nembilwi.

"We’ve included familiar imagery that makes the Eastern Cape special, including rows of aloe plants, rolling hills, and magical sunsets. In the book, Mayine wakes up every morning and ties his favourite red ribbon around his head and makes a wish. As an extra special touch, we include a red ribbon with the book for the kiddies to be like Mayine and make their own wishes too."
