‘Get out of SA’ fearful parents tell kids

accreditation
Over half of SA’s parents would advise their kids to emigrate, according to the Parent24 Kids Nation Survey.

Future exodus?

54% of parents that responded to the survey felt that their kids would be better off in a country other than SA. Related stats include that 38% of parents are not confident that their kids would find a job, 79% think that South Africa is not a safe place now and 68% believe that SA will not be a safe place in the future. These figures project a gloomy outlook which doesn’t necessarily reflect reality.

Many parents take their responsibility to their children very seriously. The Parent24 community is always looking for tips on providing the best, safest and richest parenting experience. It’s only natural that parents will be concerned that the unemployment rates in SA could present a challenge to their children. Indeed, SA has the third highest unemployment rate in the world for people between the ages of 20 and 24 according to the World Economic Forum Global Risk report of 2014. Stats SA recorded the unemployment rate for SA at 25.5% for 2013.

That said, 97% of parents polled said that they think their kids will attend university or another tertiary institution. This stat would appear to reflect an optimism that parents have on behalf of their kids.

The safety factor is worrying to parents. Any exposure to the media is a reminder that there are crimes being committed on a frightening scale every day. It’s interesting, though, that despite thinking that SA is currently unsafe, parents seem optimistic that it will be safer in the future.

All is not lost!

If the results are to be taken at face value, it would seem that we’ll be a generation of parents exporting our highly-educated kids to other countries, but the optimism which comes through in other stats from the survey seems to refute this. After all, we’re a nation whose kids want Spiderman to be president. With a super hero at the helm, we could do anything we wanted!
