Introducing your daughter to tampons

Starting your period is everything but easy on girls; they’re young and learning to handle their emotions, so having your hormones ride a roller coaster is like torture, and that’s putting it mildly.

Sit your daughter down and explain to her that what’s happening at the moment is normal and she doesn't have to feel uncomfortable at all, tell her that you get/got your period too and tell them what you experienced.

Explain to her that she will need to take sanitary measures, like using pads or tampons

Tampons

When you ask a tween about tampons, the first thing that comes to mind is some weird object that gets pushed into a vagina; but ultimately, it’s not that bad. Yes, something is being pushed up into your vagina, but if it’s done properly, it just sits quietly and does its job.

There are some things that are easily forgotten when educating girls about tampons. The Stir provides some professional tips by paediatric gynaecologist, Akua Afriyie-Gray:

- Remember that your daughter is still growing so starting small would be the better option. In all brands you get a 'beginner' size, always choose that option first until she's comfortable with using tampons.

- As we know, there are tampon-related health problems. This may scare your daughter away from using them, but do make sure you educate her on what's true. Teens are definitely at higher risk than adults of getting tampon-related health problems like Toxic Shock Syndrome. This is generally because teen's vaginal walls are much thinner than adults which makes the risk of infection higher.

If your daughter needs a some professional advice, never hesitate to visit your GP or gynae.

When in doubt, show them this video and allow them to ask you any unanswered questions.
