How breastfeeding may influence kids eating habits at the age of six

Researchers at the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention found that obesity rates have more than doubled in the past 30 years.

According to ABC News, what you feed your child in their first year may influence their health habits at the age of six.

They surveyed more than 1500 mothers and found that the kids of mothers who breastfed for longer had healthier eating habits at the age of six. The food consumption consisted of drinking more water, eating more fruits and vegetables; they also made use of less sugary drinks and sweets.

The difference between the kid who was breastfed for a shorter period of time and rather introduced to a more sweetened drink; juice, would be more likely to drink sugar-sweetened drinks at the age of six.

One of the researchers who authored the study, Kelly Scanlon, said that the relationships between early feeding and later health really emphasizes the importance of the following recommendations of the American Academy of Paediatrics.

The recommendations include:

- Exclusive breastfeeding for six months.

- Followed by continued breastfeeding until the infant is at least one-year-old.

- Parents should introduce complimentary foods starting at six months; that are healthy and nutrient rich.

Some researchers suggest that the field of childhood nutrition; preference for flavour can start as early as from the womb.

Also, breast milk exposes the infant to a variety of flavours and that it makes them accept more than formula-fed infants with regards to various flavours.

Breastfeeding also has some health benefits to children who were breastfed for longer than not; they are less likely to suffer from ear, throat and sinus infections at the age of six.
