Remember your mom used to be part of a bookclub? The idea was to get together with other moms and exchange books, providing both a social occasion and a resource-saving opportunity. Now outspoken breastfeeding advocate Alicia Silverstone has announced a similar concept on her blog, only this time moms won’t be swapping old, worn copies of Oprah’s favourite reads- they’ll be swapping breast milk, according to Jezebel.com.
She came across the idea after a friend’s recent struggles to breastfeed her baby following her breast-reduction surgery. After trying to find out where in her community she could access donor milk, the friend was concerned that she had no idea of the lifestyle choices of the donors. In particular, as a vegan, she had wanted to source similar-minded women as donors. And that’s where Alicia came up with the idea for the “Kind Mama Milk Share”, for a community of moms to post on her blog whether or not they have milk to share or are in need.
You can read more about the Kind Mama Milk Share on her blog, or find out locally via your clinic about donor (or donating) breast milk.
