Breastfeeding on Instagram

Breastfeeding in public has always been a touchy subject. Some are for it while others are wholeheartdly against it. Moms have even been ordered to breastfeed in the bathroom to prevent ‘indecent exposure’.

Even celebrities get given a hard time about public breastfeeding. Not that they care. Take a look at Pink for instance. She posted her breastfeeding photo to Instagram because she was proud to be a new mommmy. In fact there are many celebrity moms who advocate breastfeeding and aren't afraid to speak out about it. Moms such as Angelina Jolie and Beyoncé.

Recently I've been seeing many women in my Instagram feed posting breastfeeding photos with tags such as #thecause and #breastisbest. These women have formed a community where they share their breastfeeding ups and downs, tips and everyday feeds. Not everyone appreciates these photos though. One mom on Instagram, tempestbeauty, has had to create a new private account in order for people to stop reporting her photos and having her Instagram account suspended. I find it strange that someone could be offended by these beautiful photos. Almost to the point of harassing a stranger on the internet about it.

What do you think?

I asked our Facebook fans if they'd ever share breastfeeding photos on Instagram, Facebook etc. Here are their answers.
  • Nope - why would you want to share that with others? Lauren
  • No, those are private moments shared with your child. Margo
  • Yes I would. Its not against Facebook policy. Their policy states that if nipple is visible they will remove the photo. However, they don't take down obscene photos and don't as a matter of course take down bf photos - only if there are complaints about a photo. I do share breastfeeding photos and so do many of my friends. Kim
  • No! Breast feeding is private, TO ME. If someone else feels comfortable with it. That is also OK. We are all different I guess. Refiloe
