Rushing to the emergency room

accreditation
Just the other day I was bragging about how easily Amy’s teething has been so far. “My little trooper, age 7 ½ months, already has 4 teeth and hasn’t even had a fever”, I said.

Well little did I know, just a few days later I’d be eating those words.

That Saturday night Amy starting crying! Now crying isn’t usually a problem, especially when it’s your second child and you kind of know what you’re doing, but a mommy knows. The ‘I’m hungry’ or ‘I’m tired’ or ‘I’m hurting’ cries are all very different. And this time, unfortunately, it was the latter.

Fast forward to Sunday morning 1am and I’m walking into N1 city hospital’s trauma room, Amy strapped into her car seat hanging heavily on my arm and the fun began.

Sick? Me?

The earlier screaming little mite was suddenly this quite the little angel staring at everyone with those big beautiful green eyes.

After waiting a while the doctor called us in and examined her. Those examinations would go so much easier if they just understood what the big scary doctor was trying to do – just make them feel better!

Amy is the wriggliest little thing on the planet which meant I had to do the loving head lock hold so the doctor could check her ears and throat. And there we have it – her first ear and throat infection.

After being given some fairly strong medication (it was literally 2 little drops on a spoon) – she not so politely decided they could keep their medicine and gave it back! Shame, I had the doctor and the nurse cleaning the floor – I felt terrible! Amy didn’t seem too perturbed though…

Eventually the nurse got in some more medication and then we were off to have a lie down on one of the beds so the doctor could see how she was doing after the medication took affect.

Needless to say, by this time I was exhausted (about 2am now) and little Missy needed a nappy change.  The mattresses on the beds have that plastic cover over it which Amy discovered (much to her own amusement) and made a heck of a noise when she thrashed around. She decided to do her best dolphin impersonation and probably woke up everyone in the cubicles around us.

Pay up

Half an hour later, we were packed up and ready to go home. But first, the most excruciatingly painful part of the whole event – paying!

My advice to anyone with young children is to get onto a medical aid. Your children might not get sick often but when they do, they do a good job of it!

So after 7 days of antibiotics my little trooper is back to her usual adorable self – no extra teeth but at least she’s healthy again.
