WATCH: Heart-melting preemie moments

Embarking on the parenting journey is terrifying to begin with, so it’s hard to even begin to imagine the kind of trauma that comes along with any kind of complications at birth.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), preterm birth is the most common pregnancy complication worldwide, with approximately 15 million babies born prematurely every year. 

In 2011, 84 000 preterm births were recorded in South Africa, and sadly a huge 41% of these babies do not survive.

Each year, World Prematurity Day is commemorated on 17 November, highlighting the global prevalence of preterm birth, as well as shining a light on effective preventative measures and life-saving treatment.
