No car seat, so baby goes in the BOOT?

In a parenting-fail of epic proportions, a woman has been arrested after cops found a crying baby in the boot of her car, according to The Stir.

The young US mom of a five-month-old baby allegedly panicked when she was pulled over by police for a broken tail light and asked her teen passenger to hide the unrestrained child so that she wouldn’t get fined for not placing the baby in a child seat. The teen passenger then concealed the baby in the boot. A cop heard the child crying and discovered that the baby was in the boot lying on a pair of garden shears, a tyre iron and a rusty coat hanger.

A number of charges as well as a sizeable jail bond now face this hapless mom who made a drastic error in judgement in order to avoid a fine.

Child safety in cars

As Parent24 has noted recently, car safety should never be retrospective.  Although this appears to have been a mistake (assuming the young mom would have retrieved the child from the boot before driving off, had she been in an accident the consequences could have been tragic. We've noted this before when a reader contacted us about a local creche which allowed kids to travel in the dog box of the car.

Here are some non-negotiables for care safety for kids:

•    Always use correctly installed and sized car seats for infants and young children.
•    Never leave large objects (or very small ones) within reach of a child as smaller objects could present a choking hazard and large ones could be dangerous in the event of an accident.
•    Consider installing mirrors or other devices which allow the driver to see what’s happening on the back seat.
•    Disable rear windows and door catches to prevent children opening these while the car is in motion.

Do you always secure your child while travelling in the car?
