As much as new parents enjoy bonding with their newborns during feeding times, there's no denying that late-night feeds can feel like a battle to stay awake - especially if your baby is a gradual eater and takes breaks that lengthen the process.
Well, you needn't fret – here are ten ways you can keep yourself entertained as you get your baby fed and ready for sleep-time Take II.
Spend some QT with your little cutie
This one goes without saying, but to get your baby into a comfortable groove – spend some genuine quality time with them. Be sure to talk, sing, and comfort them until they’re latched on and happily suckling their way into sweet, sweet slumber.
Get yourself a tasty snack
To ensure your baby is getting well-fed, you need to stay nourished and hydrated as well. Don’t neglect yourself – prepare yourself a tasty snack, whether it’s some fruit or popcorn and water to keep your energy levels up as you get your baby fed and ready to continue their sleep.
Download an exciting audiobook or a podcast
Charge up or plug in your earphones and tune into a juicy audiobook or podcast that is sure to keep you awake and entertained. By pre-downloading them, they will be ready to keep you some sonic company as you kick off your late-night feeds.
Catch up on some reading
If audiobooks aren’t your thing, consider picking up your favourite paperback, hardcover, or e-book and indulge in some reading. You can use a reading light if you don’t want to brighten the room too much and allow yourself to be transported out of the dim room and into a whole new storybook world while you feed.
Binge a show or movie
If you don’t feel like disturbing a sleeping partner during late-night feeds – get a show or movie you’ve been saving to watch. A good lengthy series or competition show with multiple seasons will be sure to carry you through quite a few late-night feeds.

If creating your own podcast or vlog is daunting - consider journaling during this time. Keep a notebook and pen on your bedside table to jot down your running thoughts or even doodle as you feed. You could scan these pages in or type up these notes after your baby is weaned to create a personalised coffee table book as a reminder and souvenir from the sleepy days of night-time feeds.
Indulge in an artsy hobby
Using a notebook, mini canvas, or even just your smartphone or tablet – you could easily doodle or create mini art projects as you feed your baby. Whether or not you use the experience itself as your muse or create something from your phone pictures is up to you, but you could keep these to create a mini art gallery in your living room.
Play some fun digital games
Last but not least, you could download some free mind game apps to your smartphone to keep you awake. These will keep your mind sharp while you feed and can include word search or numerical patterns or card games.
