Your lazy child is your responsibility

Babies are not born fat and lazy, or stupid for that matter. They can become that way ‘cos their parents allow it.

Harsh? Maybe. True? Definitely. I picked Hannah up from school the other day and there was a fellow 11-year-old waddling around carrying more than their share of body fat. The parents have to take the blame here, in my opinion. Clearly if the kid has some medical condition turning him/her into a lard bottom, that’s a whole different kettle of fish.

With the introduction of computer games, social media, online living etc, the need for exercise has become even more critical, and we parents need to crack the whip to make sure our kids get out and have some fun while working their bodies as well.

One article I came across summed up the situation perfectly.

After a long day at school, many children may not want to participate in after-school activities because they feel tired. But in the "couch-potato" era, where both children and adults spend hours and hours each day in front of the television or computers, exercise is a must. An inactive lifestyle is leading to an ever-increasing number of overweight and out-of-shape adults. Unfortunately, more and more children are also facing the same challenges.

Any involved parent will know that young kids are naturally energetic and will try to run around like dervishes at any given opportunity. Just trying to keep up with them can keep your own fitness levels up.

The challenge really is to keep the momentum going into their teens and until they’re ready make their own way in the world.

It’s quite obvious that exposing children to many different activities during school can help them grow into healthy, active adults. As long as children are having fun and parents remember not to push them too hard, children can easily become more physically fit.

These days, cyberspace continues ever steadily to encroach on our “real” lives and it’s no surprise that computer companies have responded to their products turning the seeds of our loins into couch potatoes by creating game consuls like Xbox.

The new generation games do offer an interactive aspect that actually requires the player to move around and simulate exercise activity. But is it enough? Can you sustain a healthy lifestyle in front of the box, even if it’s an Xbox? Apparently we’re heading to a future of total cocooning where everything from having actual sex to even eating will be available in an online reality and apparently done via avatars. Mercifully I don’t think I’m going to be around to experience that reality, but it seems that our kids might have to live and thrive there.
