Dr Lauren Yagiela discussed how Covid-19 affects children who need to be hospitalised in Michigan, USA at a virtual meeting.

This virtual meeting followed after the US Michigan state provided an update of the coronavirus as Covid-19 cases continue to spike.

Dr Yagiela takes care of the sickest children in her hospital's paediatric intensive care unit and during this meeting she shared her experiences as a healthcare worker caring for children.

She says that most children who contracted Covid-19 had a mild illness that can be cared for at home. But the small portion that got extremely sick developed severe and life-threatening illnesses due to Covid-19 and further required admission to the hospital.

She says that there are three illnesses developed due to Covid-19:

1. Pneumonia

2. Myocarditis or heart inflammation

3. Inflammatory Multisystem syndrome

Dr Yagiela says that some of the children who had diabetes became uncontrollably diabetic after the Covid-19 infection, leading to them developing a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis.

She says that other previously healthy young children developed a severe lower respiratory tract infection and have also seen children develop severe asthma exacerbations after a Covid-19 infection.

Most children they cared for with severe and life-threatening illnesses due to Covid-19 were hospitalised from a few days to up to one to two months.
