Is your child obese?

The treatment goal for obese children is not entirely to reduce weight but rather to slow or stop weight gain. That way your child can then grow into his or her body weight over a a period of time.

Remember, children are still growing and if you stop weight gain and they become taller, then they start to look like they have lost weight when in actual fact they have just just grown in height.

The treatment is 3 pronged:

1. Get active

Allow time for active playing outside such as running, catching a ball or even formal sport like netball, soccer or rugby.

2. Manage their diet

  • Reduce the amount of fat in your child’s diet.
  • Reduce the amount of unhealthy snacks that your child eats on a daily basis. DO NOT pack these snacks into child's lunch boxes for school. Rather include yoghurt, fruit and a healthy sandwich.
3. Modify behaviour

Self monitoring and recording food intake, slowing the rate of eating and limiting the time and place of eating. All these can be fun when done with mom or dad and will also make your child feel special because the entire process will be focused on them.

This treatment is highly effective. Research shows that it is much easier to change a child’s behaviour than that of an adult.

Don’t forget to let your kid drink a lot of clean water, but be careful at night if your child is still potty training.

Tip: Don't give your child any liquids after 7pm and let them empty the bladder just before bedtime!

Ensure that you, as the parent also display good healthy eating practices because your child will be looking to you as a role model.
