With less than a week to go you’ll probably be spending the weekend getting together the kids’ outfits, cleaning up the house for family visits and stocking up on groceries for Eid breakfast, lunch and supper. Which is all good and well until you realise you still have to go home and prepare all those meals, not to mention all the treats, for the visitors.


But that’s where we come in!

We’ve asked a few moms to share their recipes with us and put together a little video of our own to give you an idea of what to do with all those leftover dates.

Bashiera Parker’s chocolate date balls


  • 350g medjool dates
  • 60g chopped walnuts
  • 4 tbsp cocoa


  1. De-pit dates and put them in a food processor along with your chopped walnuts and cocoa.
  2. Blend until you have a fine, crumbly mixture.
  3. Press and roll a teaspoon full of mixture in your hands to make a ball. Tip: Making sure your hands are warm will ensure the mixture comes together and compresses nicely.
  4. Coat your date ball in an ingredient of your choice. We’d suggest finely chopped nuts, coconut or even chocolate and sprinkles!

Nasrene Sheik shares her basic biscuit recipe


  • 250g butter
  • 3/4cup
  • Sugar
  • A little bit of oil
  • 1/4 cup maizena
  • Enough flour to make a soft dough.


  1. Beat butter, sugar and oil with a hand mixer until light and creamy, (about 5 minutes).
  2. Add maizena and beat again.
  3. Sift flour in a little at a time and mix with a wooden spoon until you get a soft dough.
  4. Cut out or pipe through nozzle and bake until light brown underneath.

Burfee, with compliments of Fatima Gathoo Danka


  • 1kg Klim
  • 4 cups fresh cream
  • 1 large tin Nestle cream
  • 3 ½ cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • Elachi powder (cardamom)
  • Ground almonds


  1. Take ½ tin Nestle cream and mix with Klim to make breadcrumbs.
  2. Add elachi powder and almonds.
  3. Cook ½ tin Nestle cream and fresh cream on low heat with a piece of butter. Cook the cream 'til it gets thick and yellow, stirring all the time.
  4. Make a syrup with water and sugar.
  5. Mix syrup, klim and cream mixture quickly.
  6. Set in container.

Try Zahirra Kathrada-Saeed's delicious Ferrero milkshake:


  • 1 litre milk
  • 6 scoop chocolate ice cream
  • 6 Ferreros
  • 1 medium sized Bar One (chopped) or Nutella


  1. Put milk and half of your ice cream in a blender and blend well.
  2. Add all the Ferreros and blend some more.
  3. Divide leftover ice cream in glasses and pour milkshake over.
  4. Chill in the freezer.
  5. Garnish with chopped Ferreros.

Tarryn Samiera Makka is making Saucy Portugese Chicken to take to family lunch:


  • 1 chicken
  • 2 level tsp Robertsons chicken spice
  • 1 full tsp coarse red chillies
  • Salt
  • 1 tsp fine jeera
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp crushed garlic

Sauce ingredients

  • 1 tub fresh cream
  • 1/4 cup Nandos garlic peri peri sauce or any garlic portuguese sauce
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp parsley
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste


  1. Marinade chicken and cook in garlic butter and a little olive oil.
  2. Cook sauce in butter.
  3. Once butter is melted pour sauce over cooked chicken and grill for few minutes (be careful not to dry the sauce out)
  4. Garnish with parsley.
  5. Tip: Serve with savoury rice and greek salad.
