Many children only have one or two meals at home under the watchful eye of their parents. Parents work and have to leave their children in the care of someone else during the day like day cares and crèches . Some of these places of care require the parents to pack food in for their children, but often parents don’t pack enough or the healthiest options.
Children should have snacks but not on chips, sweets and biscuits. They need to have healthy snacks like fruits and yoghurts packed in their lunchboxes with their normal rations of food for the day.
Children should have up to 6 small meals per day which includes 3 snacks between meals.
Below is a guide for children 1-3 years of age.
• Remember that children have small tummies so you should feed small meals often instead of 3 big meals at this age, they can’t even sit for that long to finish big servings of food!
• Use fruits and veggies that are season, they are packed with goodness and often cheaper and easily available.
• Offer children a variety of food, even those that you do not like. That way you’ll be sure to reach the recommended allowances of vitamins and mineral to support growth.
• Nuts contain good types of fat however you should be cautious as they could cause choking in small children.
• Children mimic the behavior of adults, teach your children from a young age to play (exercise) and to eat healthily.
• Don’t forget to let your kids drink lots of clean water, be careful at night though if you are still potty training!
