It's not
just about not hitting your kids, but the choices you make
too. Gentle parenting has
become more popular over the last few years. We spoke to an expert, as well as
parents who are observing this style, to get an insight into it.
"Gentle parenting provides parents with the opportunity to connect with their children on all levels but especially at an emotional level," says Professor Nicolette Roman, a SARChI chair in the human capabilities, social cohesion and the family at the University of the Western Cape.
"Every behaviour is a communication between the parent and the child. So when the child has a stress response, the parent should try to understand the underlying issue, which is often a need [not a want] of a child," adds Roman.
