Keep the luggage minimal. You might think it’s a good idea to give each of your kids a little bag, packed with their stuff. It’s not, because the reality is that you will end up carrying it, and your own hand luggage, and at least one child (if you don’t have the pram). Take just one piece of on-board luggage for the family. Seriously.
Take your own portable DVD player. Even my 5-year-old struggled to use the ear phones. And don’t worry about the other passengers getting frustrated by the sound - after all, they’re all wearing the earphones!
Let your kids watch as many movies as they can handle. Don’t try and impose your normal 'screen time' rules - flying for 14 hours, sitting in one very uncomfortable chair, is not a normal situation. If they’re sitting still, they might fall asleep. And you can drink a dinky bottle of wine, which means you might fall asleep!
Don’t try and pack enough entertainment. It will never be enough, and it will break your shoulder when you attempt to carry it and your child’s bag, and your child(ren) in the airport. One colouring book, one sticker book, and the DVD player with as many DVDs as you can carry.
Don’t do drugs. Especially if you're not familiar with them. The one I tried tasted disgusting and was sticky as toffee (which we discovered when it was tried and rejected). In addition, I don’t think any drug can really overcome childish over-excitement about being on an plane.
Don’t try and force sleep. It might happen, it might not. If they’re happy, leave them. On a long enough flight, exhaustion will eventually win - even if only in the final half hour!
Pack extra clothes. Not only for your children, but also for yourselves (and potentially any other unfortunate flyers who might fall in the path of treat-induced vomit).
