Whether you're expecting your first child or 3rd child, one of the questions that you're always asked is "What are you hoping it is?" Personally my answer was always "a human" even though what people wanted to know was if I wanted a boy or girl. I wanted a boy but wouldn't have been heartbroken had it been a girl. After suffering a miscarriage previously all I wanted was for my baby to be born healthy. Cliched but true.
In a recent interview with People Magazine, model and wife of John Legend, Chrissy Teigan revealed that she chose the gender of their baby that had been conceived via IVF after struggling with infertility.
“Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.’ ”
Her reasons don't really matter to be honest, because it's their business and it's her body.
The internet however was not happy.
In a tweet that has since been deleted Twitter user @real_vondacole: "Did you choose the hair and the eye color too @chrissyteigen... smh messing with the natural blessings from God. I liked you a lot".
my natural blessing from god was infertility. https://t.co/OtGJkZ0nA9

People on the internet were getting brave behind the keyboard and just being unnecessarily rude and hurtful.
natural or ivf, my daughter will never speak to another human like this, @baby_c_69 pic.twitter.com/aLfBS8O3eF— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 24, 2016
what in the...she can do whatever she wants...people really reaching for outrage here https://t.co/vLMNJCiP6S— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 25, 2016
After her mentions blew up she took to Twitter to clarify the situation a bit:
we didn't create a little girl. we had multiple embryos. girls and boys. we simply chose to put in a female first (and second)...— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 25, 2016
we didn't "throw away" anything and still would love to have more of both in the future. hard to explain such a complicated process here.— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 25, 2016
you'd be surprised at how many people you know go through this. also every doctor knows the sex of the embryos, it isn't some grand secret.— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 25, 2016
Countless times I've read posts on Facebook about how a mom-to-be was devastated because she wasn't carrying the gender of baby that she wanted. I can guarantee that those moms would have jumped at the chance to choose the gender of their babies. So why is it that when a celebrity does get the opportunity to do this do people jump down her throat?
Personally I wouldn't choose and just see where the cards fall. But IVF is already putting the baby-making process into the hands of science and I don't see how choosing a gender is any more controversial.
As Chrissy's final word on the whole drama:
I truly, truly understand not agreeing with what we have done. I just don't understand the need to be so vile and mean about it.— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 25, 2016
