The 20-year-old embryo

accreditation
George Bush (the first one) was president of the United States. The internet was in its infancy. Wilson Pickett, Sinead O’Connor and Roxette were at the top of the charts.

And somewhere, in a lab, an embryo was frozen.

Fly forward 19 years and seven months, and a baby is born, after the embryo was implanted at the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. The mother had been undergoing fertility treatment for about 10 years before the successful implant.

This is the longest that a frozen embryo has been kept and then successfully implanted.

Strange to think that the baby is living in such a different world from the one in which he was first created. He’s old enough to be his own father!

Other major reproductive milestones, from the American Radio Works website:

1953    First sperm bank.
1970    First commercial sperm bank.
1978    First test tube baby – Briton Louise Brown was famously the first baby to be born by in vitro fertilisation.
1984    First baby born from a frozen egg.
1984    First human baby born from a frozen embryo.
