Bruising

accreditation
Small broken blood vessels caused by a bump make a purple mark under the skin. A small bruise is nothing to worry about, as long as there is no abnormal swelling or pain. It willl usually fade to yellow and disappear on its own.

What to do

A cold compress in the form of ice wrapped in a cloth can help ease pain and reduce swelling – don’t keep it on for more than 10 minutes. While many people swear by arnica to speed up the healing of a bruise, others say it makes no difference. If the skin is broken, the bruise needs to be treated like an open wound and cleaned and covered with a dressing. If your child bruises more than average or when bumped very lightly, get the doctor to check that all is well.
