Tonsillitis

accreditation
Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils, which are the small masses of lymphatic tissue at the back of the throat. It can either be caused by viruses or bacteria. It most commonly affects children between the ages of 3 and 7. Obstruction to breathing by enlarged tonsils may cause snoring and disturbed sleep patterns.

What to do

A doctor will need to diagnose the cause of the tonsillitis. If it is bacterial, antibiotics will be prescribed. The tonsils are usually only removed in cases of recurring or serious infection, or for significant airway obstruction.
