In October, 100 schools from across the world gathered virtually for the first ever World Education Week conference.

It was there that Dr Ria de Villiers, the head of the Department of Basic Education's (DBE) E3 programme (Entrepreneurship, Employability and Education), announced plans for playful project-based learning (PBL).

With the aim of reducing the unemployment rate among youth by 90% within an eight-year time frame, De Villiers noted the department's intention of rolling out PBL in all South African schools by 2030.
