Rika Badenhorst teaches Grade 8 and 9 Afrikaans First Additional Language at Maragon Private School in Mooikloof, Pretoria. She created a series of informative, but funny, video lessons to keep her pupils engaged with the subject.
While the school quickly switched to online learning via Microsoft Teams, Badenhorst knew that some pupils would struggle to keep up during an online Teams meeting, or that they would be unable to attend because of poor internet connections or loadshedding. So she put together a series of videos to explain the work and posted it on her YouTube channel, Bad Teacher.

Pupils could watch the videos over and over again if needed.
It was a huge success and helped many other pupils. The videos were even watched and recommended by teachers at other schools. With 15 videos uploaded in three months, the channel has had 12 584 views. Seven of the videos have received more than 1 000 views.
The school's principal, Chris Zaayman, says Badenhorst's lesson plans were colourful, personalised and easy to follow. She would send a message on the WhatsApp group to every class she teaches – every period of the day – and made sure they knew exactly what they had to do every day during the lockdown.
